Case Study – Major Project Review and Turnaround

CLIENT OVERVIEW

Our client was executing a major capital project when it began facing significant cost overruns and schedule delays. These issues raised concerns about the overall financial viability of the project and prompted the need for urgent intervention.

THE CHALLENGE

The project was mid execution and experiencing substantial budget and timeline blowouts. Without clear visibility into project health, leadership lacked the insights needed to make informed decisions, raising serious concerns around governance, control, and delivery confidence.

APPROACH

The team began by conducting a comprehensive review of the project, analysing all key components including engineering, the schedule, cost estimates, contracts, work completed to date, and the organisational structure. Based on this assessment, a range of recommendations was developed, most notably the implementation of a tailored Project Controls Improvement Plan to address the identified issues.

Key improvement steps were then implemented, including the introduction of a structured trends analysis process and a commitment tracking process to enhance cost and schedule control. To establish a solid foundation moving forward, a new integrated estimate and schedule were developed from the ground up, using industry best-practice tools and methodologies. Finally, a suite of targeted reports was introduced to provide clear visibility into key project health metrics and support informed decision-making.

SOLUTION

Through structured analysis and practical interventions, the team stabilised project performance. A bottom up rebuild of cost and schedule baselines, paired with improved controls and reporting, delivered transparency, accountability, and the ability to course-correct in real time.

IMPACT

The project experienced a significant uplift in governance and control, enabling better oversight and more effective decision-making. With a robust, integrated estimate and schedule in place, the client gained clear visibility into project progress, emerging trends, and overall health allowing issues to be identified and addressed proactively. This improved transparency and control contributed directly to regaining stakeholder confidence and improving the project's path forward.
