Case Study - Rapid Prototyping of Operational Dashboards

Crystal Ganzorig

CLIENT OVERVIEW

Our client operates a screening and barge loading facility for a remote mining location. A fleet of loaders move the ore from the ROM after which conveyors transfer ore to an automated loading facility. Historically the utilisation and reliability of the operation has impacted operational performance.

THE CHALLENGE

The business sought to implement operational dashboards to bolster the capabilities of operators and supervisors by increasing transparency of the site's performance. Previously, no day-to-day reporting system existed.  These dashboards could offer a live, interactive platform for monitoring key performance indicators, streamlining the reporting process, and enabling real-time adjustments to boost operational efficiency.

APPROACH

Our approach was to engage directly with shift supervisors and line management to develop prototype dashboards quickly after the initial requirements workshop. This collaborative effort ensured that the prototypes were not only aligned with the operational needs but also allowed for rapid iteration based on real-world feedback. Within weeks, we had a working model that could be fine-tuned in a continuous improvement cycle.

SOLUTION

The rapid prototyping phase was instrumental in validating the dashboards' design and functions early on, avoiding costly revisions during the technical development stage. Utilising PowerPoint for prototype development provided a clear and straightforward way for stakeholders to visualise and provide feedback on the dashboards, ensuring the solution was both efficient and user-centric.

IMPACT

By engaging key stakeholders throughout the process, the reports were refined to closely align with user needs, ensuring swift adoption and minimal resistance to the introduced changes. This collaborative approach has led to a more effective reporting system that supports informed decision making and agile responses to changing business dynamics.
